In August 1972, Yen-Sheng joined Chen-Pei in Ithaca, NY upon finishing her masters thesis research at SIU Carbondale. The following month, the couple were married at the Anabel Taylor Hall Chapel of Cornell Law School, on September 2, 1972. The Monday after her and Chen-Pei’s Saturday wedding was Labor Day, and Yen-Sheng spent the holiday looking for jobs. In her first full-time role she served as a research assistant in the lab of Dr. John F. Wootton, at the Cornell Veterinary School. Yen-Sheng passed her foreign language requirement in German in 1973 and earned a M.S. degree in Chemistry that same year. She worked in the labs of Professors John F. Wooton, Jane Gibson, and Peter C. Hinkle in succession between September 1972 and July 1976. A perfectionist in every respect, she applied herself studiously and held herself to the highest standards, excelling in academic, professional and family pursuits. One supervisor, Professor Peter C. Hinkle, for whom she worked as a research assistant, recognized in her a meticulous preparer, with a talent for science and precise, skillful hands. Under his guidance, Yen-Sheng co-authored two publications: a refereed, peer-reviewed paper and one volume in a symposium publication.

Yen-Sheng attended the Chinese Bible Study Group on Saturdays and made many friends. She was a loving and dedicated wife to Chen-Pei as he worked hard to complete his Ph.D. thesis research under the direction of Professor Ray Wu. Yen-Sheng was well-liked by her lab mates and members of the Wu lab and their families and made several lifelong friends along the way.
